8 Mile Trail Run
So there I was, embarking on an 8 mile trail run from a private trail from Hi-Hill Village into Bald Mt State Recreation Area and running directly out ninja-style! If “Bald Mountain” seems harmless enough, think again; I was in for quite an exciting run.
The South Unit was as tranquil and relaxing as meditation, with only my brush with Lower Trout Lake providing memorable detours. But my agility was tested during my run on the North Unit; its 472-foot elevation gain represented everything covered – not just its North Unit section alone! Yes, that 472-foot gain engulfing both sections will stay with me long after this run is finished – my legs won’t let me forget it!
The weather was ideal for an 8 mile trail run, a cool 63 degrees and cloudy – perfect for blending into the background, you might say! I began the run at 12:30 PM wearing my new Apple iWatch Ultra 2 to track every step, heartbeat, and ninja move I made. Running on Brooks Cascadia, 17s felt like running on clouds – while tunes came straight to my ears thanks to my Aftershokz bone conduction headphones – perfect for Ninja Running Meet Ninja Tech.
As for muddy patches, I decided to show off my “dance through the mud” moves at two stealthy spots in the North Unit. Although brief but graceful! While exploring, I spotted several ponds that looked like secret ninja gathering spots thanks to vibrant algae growth in their surface layers.
I encountered one mountain biker on my 8 mile trail run who looked like they might be training for some covert Tour de Bald Mountain event and two hikers with their scout dogs to guide them.
But that wasn’t all: those tricky tree roots on the trail tried to ruin my flow like nothing before; added in some rocky inclines, it felt like nature’s version of an obstacle course! For 7 miles, I breezed easily; for the last mile, it proved more challenging – even ninjas have their challenging moments!
What did I do after my 8 mile trail run and channeling my energy and appreciating nature’s beauty? I headed home, devoured a meal, took a victory shower, and transitioned back into my day job, just like any good ninja should.
Be sure to check out additional training runs and races!
