A Challenging Race with a Heartwarming Mission. Discover Why it’s a Must-run!

For an inaugural race, organizers did an outstanding job. Even as a last-minute registrant via RunSignUP.com, registration went smoothly; its novelty made for an engaging adventure for all runners as we ventured into unknown terrains.

Course Description

The course took us through wooded trails, open fields, private dirt road, and even mud patches – from wooded trails and open spaces to tree roots and rocks found along the course. The tree roots and rocks on the inclines and declines made for an interesting but challenging run; my legs certainly felt every incline!

Aid Stations and Volunteers

Due to its short distance, this race did not offer aid stations; however, volunteers played an essential role by being stationed at key intersections to ensure no runner got lost along the course.

Post-Race Amenities

At the finish line, a photographer was waiting to capture each finisher’s moment. The organizers provided refreshments such as bottled water, fruits, and donuts – not forgetting an outstanding medal made of a tree branch with the race logo branded onto it! Homemade soups and other items could be purchased to support Skyline Camp and Retreat Center’s fundraising efforts. Also, each runner received a cool Campfire 5K logo t-shirt and a ticket to make a S’mores by the campfire after the race!

Awards

Finishers weren’t forgotten either! With three age categories and special recognition for top finishers.

Personal Takeaways

My performance at my second race in nearly two years was satisfying. I placed sixth in my age group (40-99 group) and 24th overall (29:06.5 time). The hills provided an unexpected challenge that many participants were quick to discuss jokingly during the awards ceremony. Matt Henry, Executive Director,  even acknowledged this sentiment during his closing remarks!

Participant Turnout and Ambience

With 51 runners participating, this race provided an intimate setting. The atmosphere was electric, and knowing we were running for an important cause – helping children attend summer camp next year – added an unforgettable element. Skyline’s commitment to its mission of supporting over 150 campers annually through financial aid is indeed commendable.

Would I Return?

Absolutely. From the challenge of the course and the worthy cause to my personal experience at this event, I’ve already marked my calendar for next year’s race.

Recommendation to Future Participants

Train for inclines and be prepared for varied terrain. It’s an event with heart, so remembering that you are running for an important cause will help push you across the finish line!
