On September 23rd, 2023, I raced in the Ciderfest 5K Trail Run held at Diehl’s Orchard & Cider Mill in Holly, Michigan. At 9:00 AM sharp, I and 110 other runners began the scenic journey timed by Eastside Racing Company (results)through rolling hills and picturesque pathways of Diehl’s orchard–including racing right through a cornfield! A special highlight!

Weather couldn’t have been more ideal; with temperatures reaching 59 degrees at race time and golden hues covering the orchard, perfect conditions existed for racing. After an absence of two years from competitive running, I felt both exhilaration and nerves as the terrain, energy, and cool morning air propelled me forward – crossing the finish line at 28 minutes 27 seconds with an average pace of 9 minutes 11 seconds to claim 21st spot out of 111 runners; quite an accomplishment!

Post-race, it was time to enjoy all the orchard offered: refreshing apple cider and donuts were delicious treats to reward runners’ hard efforts; race medals were presented to the top three in each age category as an incentive. I look 2nd place in my age group, 55-59.  However, there were only three runners  in my group. ??? Regardless, it’s a nice souvenir!

Ciderfest 2023, held from September 23-24, brought with it plenty of activities aimed at providing fun for everyone – an art fair featuring talented crafters, hayrides, and pony rides provided fun rides for younger attendees; navigation skills were tested through a corn maze; along with numerous other exciting experiences designed to bring families together in one location for one memorable weekend!

Reminiscing, I realize it was more than just a race; it was more of a celebration – of nature, community, and personal achievement! The Ciderfest 5K Trail Run was expertly organized with engaging course design – the ideal introduction back into racing after several years away! Here’s to many more miles and memories ahead!
